Amazon Plans Major Job Cuts

Tech News 17 hours ago 6271 Views

Foreign media reports indicate that Amazon is preparing for another large-scale job cut. In the coming week, Amazon is expected to terminate the employment of thousands of additional corporate (white-collar) workers. This move is considered the second phase of Amazon's major plan to reduce its corporate workforce by approximately 30,000 employees. By October 2025, Amazon has already laid off around 14,000 workers, and reports suggest that a similar number of job cuts could occur during this round as well. The reductions are expected to impact key divisions such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Retail, Prime Video, and Human Resources (People Experience and Technology). However, Amazon has refrained from issuing an official statement regarding this matter. Previous layoffs were linked to the rapid growth of AI technology, with an internal Amazon letter describing AI as "the most powerful technological change seen since the Internet era." Nevertheless, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy later clarified that these job cuts are primarily due to the company’s "culture" and excessive bureaucracy, rather than economic or AI-related reasons.

Jassy pointed out that over time, Amazon has accumulated extra management layers and a workforce larger than necessary. With increased efficiency through AI usage, he previously indicated that further reductions in the corporate workforce are expected in the future. Amazon employs approximately 1.58 million people overall, with the majority working in warehouses, delivery, and fulfillment centers. This is considered the largest job cut in the company’s history. In 2022, Amazon laid off about 27,000 employees, which was the largest cut before this. Laid-off employees receive pay for 90 days and are given opportunities to apply for other jobs within the company or seek alternative employment during this period. This 90-day period is set to end this week.
