OpenAI Tests Ads in ChatGPT

Tech News 4 hours ago 345 Views

OpenAI has decided to experimentally introduce promotional ads within its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. This is seen as an important step for OpenAI to generate additional revenue. OpenAI states that ads will start appearing in the coming weeks for users in the United States who are on the Free plan and the lower-priced “Go” plan. It is also clarified that users on higher subscription plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise will not see ads. These ads will not affect the responses provided by ChatGPT, and OpenAI emphasizes that users’ chat histories will not be shared with any advertisers. Ads will only appear at the bottom of ChatGPT’s responses and will be related solely to the sponsored product or service.

Until now, OpenAI has primarily relied on subscription revenue, but due to the high costs involved in developing AI technology, exploring new revenue streams has become essential. Reports indicate that OpenAI plans to spend over a trillion dollars on AI infrastructure by 2030. However, analysts suggest that while introducing ads could bring significant revenue to OpenAI, some users might dislike this change. If the ad experience is poor, users may switch to other AI chatbots like Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude.

OpenAI further clarifies that no ads will be shown to users under 18 years old, and ads related to sensitive topics such as health and politics will be completely blocked. Considering ChatGPT has over 800 million weekly active users, experts believe this move could be a major turning point in the business model of the AI industry.
